Zinnia // Tara Kannangara // Natural Sympathies @ The Aviary
Jun 26 @ 7:30 pm – 11:30 pm

Edmonton, we bring you a powerhouse trifecta at the Aviary: Natural Sympathies (Saskatchewan), Tara Kannangara (Toronto via British Columbia), ZINNIA (Toronto via Montana)

$10 in advance / $15 at door
————————————————————————
ZINNIA is the Toronto-based indie art pop project of Rachael Cardiello. With layered synth and driving beats, ZINNIA brings an explosive range to Cardiello’s writing, equal parts intimate and fierce. Recently described as “Kate Bush meets Meatloaf” and first to proclaim a deep love for Bruce Springsteen, this is ZINNIA.

For fans of: Big Thief, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Future Islands, Cornelia Murr, PJ Harvey

“Lupins” goes beyond superb and enters the realm of glorious, while the gorgeous voice of Zinnia mesmerizes.”

————————————————————————
Categorizing her diverse sound is a difficult proposition. Juno- nominated artist, Tara Kannangara is meshing Jazz, Pop, Electronic-synth music, musical theatre, whatever moves her. This hasn’t stopped her from cultivating a singular voice that is captivating audiences all over North America.

“There is a new album to come out later this year, and one can only imagine where this artist will be in a few year’s time. The triple threat vocals, trumpet, and song-writing, along with something say in music, is a recipe for a long and rewarding career.”

————————————————————————-
Natural Sympathies is the solo project of Regina musician Amber Goodwyn, formerly of the Montreal bands Cobra & Vulture and Nightwood. Natural Sympathies makes music that is an eclectic mix of playful vocal harmonies, urgent lyrics, elemental drum machine beats, organ, twisty guitar and synth. Her live shows explore her inner life through fantasy, using dance and otherworldly projections and occasionally performing with a coven of back-up dancers called The Mutual Affection.

Edmonton Stonewall 50th Anniversary Rally & March @ Alberta Legislature Building
Jun 28 @ 4:30 pm – 8:00 pm

In response to Edmonton Pride Festival Society cancelling this year’s festival, and on the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, all sexual and gender diverse community members and our allies are asked to gather and rally to call out queer organizations in this city for their continued negligence in spearheading our inclusion and advocacy. This community is facing uncertain times ahead with a United Conservative majority government and we need to come together. We gather to commemorate Stonewall, to celebrate our diverse community, for QTIBPOC community members and their allies, and for 2SLGBTQ+ people around the world. Speakers representing intersections across our community will deliver speeches followed by 50 seconds of silence to honour all queer people who have fought and come before us. A candlelight vigil will honour them to close the ceremony followed by entertainment and community networking. This is a grassroots led event with co-organizational support from Shades of Colour and RARICAnow.

Jay Gilday Band

As a songwriter, Jay threads together the colours of his own ancestral traditions: Dene spirituals, Irish ballads, Canadian folk and rock. He was raised in a family of accomplished musicians on the tundra of Yellowknife, where his music electrifies its never-ending days and nights.

Whether on the main stage of a summer festival or headlining a shadowy cabaret, Jay captivates. He is equally arresting as a solo performer, crooning over acoustic guitar and piano, as the front-man of an eight-piece rock band, baiting dance floors with infectious hooks and boundless energy.
